Proposition recommendations

September 29th, 2008, 1:11 pm · 5 Comments · posted by Scott Shackford

We’ll be running the Orange County Register’s state proposition recommendation editorials over the next couple of weeks. Their views match mine, of course, so running their editorials gives me the time to talk about local issues like Measure D.

I do try to do my own editorials on propositions when there’s only a couple on the ballot or if they have a particular tie to Barstow, but given there’s so many of them this year, there’s no way I can spend the time going over each one to give individual recommendations.

  • Julie Heggenberger says:

Why do you think your opinion is the only one that matters? You publish that you are a freedom newspaper. I guess that only applies if the freedom you protect is one you agree with. I have sent 2 editorials on my postion on Measure D ,which is YES. Everyone in Barstow knows your opinion and your suggestions but just because you are the editor do you really think it is far to only print what you agree with. I wander how many of your readers realize the censorship and control you are using in YOUR newspaper, Maybe it is time for Barstow to get OUR newspaper.

  • Your letter is in our system and will run sometime in this upcoming week. You have not been censored. We have received quite a few letters due to the coming election.

Letters don’t just stay in the system for months! I know three different people including Julie, who have turned in letters that you have failed to print. Its sad that the little power you have, you abuse by not printing the ”opinion” of your readers! Is that not the purpose of the opinion section of the news paper? This measure is very important to the citizens of Barstow! Its not your right to withhold information like you have been doing!

  • Can somebody explain to me why it’s the immediate assumption of censorship when somebody sends in a letter and it doesn’t appear? I run letters from people who disagree with me all the time. I’ve run several Pro-8 letters (not to mention Richard Reeb’s commentary) and an entire guest commentary from Chief Jauss supporting Measure D. Nobody is being censored.

I do not have a letter from Julie Clemmer (I’m assuming this is the Julie you’re referring to). If it was sent via e-mail, it never arrived. Have her call me about it or resend it. Given that I’ve run letters from her before, why on earth would you assume I’m censoring her?

If I decide not to run a letter (and I do very well have the right to do so) I try to contact the writer and let them know why. Typically there’s really only two reasons I withhold letters: 1) The letter potentially libels a private individual, which could expose us (and the writer) to a lawsuit; or 2) The letter involves a private dispute between individuals or private business complaints, which are not appropriate subjects for our letters page.

Im refering to the Julie Heggenberger who made the first comment in this section. You are censoring by only putting articles written by you! Give the citizens a voice, Ive read the letters submitted by citizens and they were nowhere near slanderous! We had a family member even try to pay money to put a letter in. If thats not one sided, I don’t know what is?
